چکیده

Study selection and assessment: randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated calcium channel blockers or a blockers as the main treatment for ureteral stone disease (mean size 3.9–7.8 mm) and had >1 week follow up (range 15–48 d). Studies were excluded if medical therapy was an adjunct to surgery. 9 RCTs (n = 693, mean age range 34–47 y, 25% to 60% women) met the selection criteria. In 3 RCTs, corticosteroids were given to the treatment groups with the calcium channel blocker nifedipine. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were given to both treatment and control groups in 7 RCTs. RCTs were pooled using a fixed effects model. Quality assessment of the studies included method of randomisation, concealment of allocation, blinding, loss to follow up, and intention to treat analysis.

Medical therapy to facilitate urinary stone passage: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND Medical therapies to ease urinary-stone passage have been reported, but are not generally used. If effective, such therapies would increase the options for treatment of urinary stones. To assess efficacy, we sought to identify and summarise all randomised controlled trials in which calcium-channel blockers or alpha blockers were used to treat urinary stone disease. METHODS We searc...

A systematic review of medical therapy to facilitate passage of ureteral calculi.

STUDY OBJECTIVE Acute renal colic is a common presenting complaint to the emergency department. Recently, medical expulsive therapy using alpha-antagonists or calcium channel blockers has been shown to augment stone passage rates of moderately sized, distal, ureteral stones. Herein is a systematic evaluation of the use of medical expulsive therapy to facilitate ureteral stone expulsion. METHO...

METHODS A Cochrane style systematic review was conducted on published literature from 1990 to 2016, to include low RoB and a power calculation. A pooled meta-analysis was conducted.
